S. J. DeVoe was prominent carpenter in Mount Vernon's early history, and may have been responsible for building this house.  The house has been extensively altered, including several additions to the side and rear, give this home a somewhat eclectic look.  The front facade features a gabled front porch, most likely one of the later additions, and false shutters flanking the windows.  Carved detailing above the front door is also a relatively modern addition.
